The above link is to a matter filed in U.S. District Court for the District of Kansas in which an order is sought compelling Brownback to investigate corruption in the Dept. of Justice. Brownback, so far has refused to take action upon disclosures of criminal activity received by his office.

inadvance-When you can prove Planned Parenthood is strapping women of color down to gurneys for forced abortions, or is force-feeding them birth control, then you can make your spurious claims about Planned Parenthood and genocide.

Again with the strawman arguments MrEMan. When Brownback proposes a nationwide ban on contraception, then, by all means, feel free to bring up your tripe.

I'm always amazed to hear a self-described conservative who supports any member of the republic party in Congress over the last 6 years. Brownback and his fellow republics have allowed GWB to take the party light years away from it's true meaning. Our deficit has never been higher, (guess who owns us? China and Japan!) and we now have a larger and more intrusive government which has been plagued by ineptitude and incompetence. Any self-respecting conservative (and I know MANY) should be doing everything they can to clean out the rat's nest that has been made of the republic party.

By the way, Romney is meat. The fundies are already starting to pick his carcass. The AP reported yesterday that his great grandfather was a bigtime polygamist. Guilt by association. It's unfortunate that the party has been hijacked by religious extremism.

WhoDat - If we were talking about the rest of the world your statement would hold merit. We're discussing the views of someone who wishes to be the President of the United States and in this country anti-contraception views are absolutely held only by a small minority. There is only a small portion of Catholics, none that I know, who want to tell women they can have sex only to have babies.

Joe H - Is that it? That's all you have? Bill O'Reilly would be proud of that response.

I don't believe it is illiberal to question how someone's relationship to their faith is going to affect their stances/actions on public policy. Kennedy did address this issue, as you say: "To allay fears that his Catholicism would impact his decision-making, he said in a famous speech in Houston, Texas (to the Greater Houston Ministerial Association), on September 12, 1960, 'I am not the Catholic candidate for President. I am the Democratic Party's candidate for President who also happens to be a Catholic. I do not speak for my Church on public matters - and the Church does not speak for me.'" Apparently he was successful in allaying those fears, as he was elected.

I would argue that we live in far different times now, and to understand a candidate regarding this issue is, uh, shall we say, fundamental for a great many people, left and right, as there is a belief among some that public policy should be founded on a bedrock of religious principles. I would be very interested in Brownback's answer to the question of contraception, and I imagine there are those on the right who would be also.

As for the subheading of this blog, let's savage Sam Brownback's policies, not Sam Brownback.

vaara, those of us considering Sam Brownback to vote for president, do so because we are social conservatives, and we believe that except for racial discrimination and the advancement of women, the country was much better before the 1960's which you symbolize. Plus, Sam adds a note of compassion to his conservatism. However, we conservatives are concerned about his too liberal stance on letting too many to immigrate too fast (note, does not mean we are against immigration, my grandparents were immigrants), and VERY concerned that his campaign is not firing on all engines as compared to, e.g., his main opponent on the GOP right, Mitt Romney.

Kansasnate and vaara, have you ever heard of John F. Kennedy, speaking to Baptist Ministers in Dallas? Aren't we beyond religious tests for Prez? Same goes for the ridiculous things being said about Mitt Romney. Oppose Brownback and Romney's policies, fine, but not because they are Catholic and Mormon. Most illiberal of you.

Joe on 12/22 plays the "redneck" card. I have 3 masters' degrees, and I'm from MA--is that the usual redneck stereotype? Yet any thinking person knows that a nation is defined by its borders. That is the latin root of the word 'define,' de=concerning, -fin, limits. The Roman Empire fell because it let too many Goths in too fast. Immigration is fine, at a regulated, legal pace as it was for most of the history of our country. This is Brownback's Achilles' heel for most conservatives.
