The Great Brownback Electability Problem

by @ 10:46 pm. Filed under Campaign Trail

Over at RedState, a post entitled “They All Suck” eviscerates the current crop of GOP presidential wannabes. Their comments on Senator Brownback’s quest to be President:

[Brownback] has a better chance of getting hit by a meteor while being consumed by a blue whale being struck by lightening.

They all suck. (Well, okay, Brownback doesn’t suck at all, but I perceive no viability for his candidacy.)

Brownback thus far has not convinced, nor even made inroads in convincing, most GOP primary voters that he has a chance of winning a general election. He is viewed as utterly unelectable due to his views on abortion, gay rights, and religion in government. I sense a sort of pity for Brownback in the conservative blogs. A feeling that he represents all that they do (with the glaring omission of the immigration issue) and because of that has no chance to succeed with the American public at large.

There is one way, and one way only, that Brownback can overcome this electability argument. Cold. Hard. Cash. If he turns in a stellar fundraising report on January 31st he can prove that he is a serious candidate that could be competitive. If he raises a piddly sum, then it will be clear that the GOP donor class does not think he has a chance and thus does not think he is worth the investment.

Here is a hilarious assessment of Brownback’s campaign:

“Of all the president-wannabes who emerged from their thickets, mole holes, burrows, and termite mounds last week, the funniest was Senator Sam Brownback of Kansas who told a campaign kickoff audience that he was setting off on “the yellow brick road to the White House.” Which raises an interesting question: is Brownback running for Wizard of Oz or for president? Brownback represents the Mid Western suburban evangelicals, a sort of death cult composed of people unaware that their own lifestyle has driven them crazy. Unbeknownst to those inside the Beltway or up in Manhattan, though, the heartland of America is in deep enough despair to elect a closet maniac like Brownback. Let’s hope that he is found to be connected romantically to a male prostitute specializing in sadomasochism and humiliation.”

Thanks for the link. A little rough on the Midwest though. I can attest that there ARE in fact sane, rational people out here. We often get overshadowed, but not all mid westerners are the same. Just for the record.

    Folks,

Hope you don’t mind a Red stater from the Bluest of all (MA) once in a while. We have some lefties who grace the more conservative sites. After all, we’re all human, all Americans. So far, we love Sam, more than Mitt. There’s no reason to think that Sam couldn’t win the same states President Bush did. But if one of your lefties win, we’ll unite behind him or her, too,

I am gonna vote for Brownback though.

Great, we now have the “Wingnut of Oz”.

    Dear Fellow Americans:
I am so glad that we have the precious freedom of speech right to express our views. I would like to say that Senator Brownback is a really neat guy.

  7. inadvance Says:

    I’ll vote for Brownback

  8. vaara Says:

Why? What is so tremendous about Sam Brownback that you’d willingly give him your precious American birthright, i.e. your right to vote?

  9. Joe Says:

Is that the best you offer, vaara? You’ve said nothing but the contrary, with broad accusations and emotion-based argument as debate. So what if people want to vote for Brownback? It’s been said many, many times on this website that he has no chance of winning. Why bother “savaging” him then?

  10. Joe H. Says:

vaara, those of us considering Sam Brownback to vote for president, do so because we are social conservatives, and we believe that except for racial discrimination and the advancement of women, the country was much better before the 1960’s which you symbolize. Plus, Sam adds a note of compassion to his conservatism. However, we conservatives are concerned about his too liberal stance on letting too many to immigrate too fast (note, does not mean we are against immigration, my grandparents were immigrants), and VERY concerned that his campaign is not firing on all engines as compared to, e.g., his main opponent on the GOP right, Mitt Romney.

I’m always amazed to hear a self-described conservative who supports any member of the republic party in Congress over the last 6 years. Brownback and his fellow republics have allowed GWB to take the party light years away from it’s true meaning. Our deficit has never been higher, (guess who owns us? China and Japan!) and we now have a larger and more intrusive government which has been plagued by ineptitude and incompetence. Any self-respecting conservative (and I know MANY) should be doing everything they can to clean out the rat’s nest that has been made of the republic party.

By the way, Romney is meat. The fundies are already starting to pick his carcass. The AP reported yesterday that his great grandfather was a bigtime polygamist. Guilt by association. It’s unfortunate that the party has been hijacked by religious extremism.

The above link is to a matter filed in U.S. District Court for the District of Kansas in which an order is sought compelling Brownback to investigate corruption in the Dept. of Justice. Brownback, so far has refused to take action upon disclosures of criminal activity received by his office.
