Good ‘ole Tom Monaghan. If the name of one of Brownback’s senior advisers seems familiar, think “30 minutes or it’s free” or “Get the door, it’s Domino’s!”. Yep, the billionaire that once owned Domino’s pizza is also an extreme evangelical Catholic and thus a fervent Brownback supporter.
You might have heard Monaghan’s name in the news recently regarding the university he is building in the middle of the Florida swamps. Ave Maria will be a planned community around the Catholic University of the same name. That, however, is not what made the news. A huge uproar occurred when it was reported that Monaghan will not allow any form of contraceptives to be sold in his town.
Kudos to the first reporter who asks Brownback, “Do you agree with your close adviser Tom Monaghan that all contraceptives should be banned?”
If Brownback has advisers like this now, imagine what his cabinet could be like in 2 years…

Shoooeee, I read Sen. Brownback’s announcement of an exploratory comittee, and I gotta tell ya, THAT was some inspirin’ stuff. I havent seen anything so profound since my friend Artie ran for freshman class president back in the ’60s. And his policy statements… anti-stem cell, anti-choice, pro-Iraqi bungle… why I personally think he’s the right man to lead us into the 19th century. And his supporters! Hey, havent I seen their faces somewhere before, like maybe in the mob outside of Galileo’s house a few centuries back?

Wow! No condoms in “Ave Maria”-has Brownback ever heard of AIDS? So backwards it’s scary not to mention dangerous! This is one candidate to stay far away from.

Have you ever heard of not having sex with someone who has AIDS?
If you don’t like the policies of Ave Maria, don’t visit or live there. Simple.

… and do everything you can to prevent the U.S. from becoming one giant Ave Maria.
This means ensuring that Sam Brownback never, ever becomes President. Simple.

Well, when Brownback announces his platform to ban contraceptives in the US I’ll believe it. Until then, keep piling on the tin foil.
December 10th, 2006 at 1:36 pm
We’ll know as soon as that hypothetical reporter asks Brownback whether he wants to ban all contraceptives. Brownback’s answer will reveal him as one of the following: (a) an knee-jerk religious zealot; (b) a hypocrite; or, most likely, (c) a mush-brained waffler.
Either way, it’ll be interesting.
December 10th, 2006 at 4:24 pm
Mush-brained wafflers typically receive law degrees, serve as White House fellows, and serve two Senate terms receiving the highest number of votes any politician has ever from his state.

So, if is ever asked that question and answers it, he’s either a knee-jerk religious zealot, or a hypocrite. Thanks for providing a bit of clarity.

How about debating something a little more intelligent than insults?
At the very most, this post does nothing more than indicate an association between Sen. Brownback and Tom Monaghan. That’s it, a simple association. Do you really think Brownback is looking to repeal the sale and use of contraceptives in the US? Do you really think any Congress, Democract or Republican controlled, would even consider passing something like that? Sites like theantisam and comments like vaara’s put the paranoia of the left on full display and serve to weaken any legitimate debate you may have.

“Do you really think Brownback is looking to repeal the sale and use of contraceptives in the US?”
To the extent that Brownback’s positions on moral issues are consistent with his faith, it is perfectly reasonable to suspect him of wanting him to ban contraception.
The Catholic Church opposes abortion; so does Brownback.
The Catholic Church opposes same-sex marriage; so does Brownback.
The Catholic Church opposes contraception; so, does Brownback?
December 14th, 2006 at 4:20 pm
You’ll have to provide some actual evidence that Brownback wants to ban contraceptives in US beyond simply making a blanket application of his Catholic faith to all Americans, Protestants included.
December 14th, 2006 at 4:56 pm
He’s spoken out against OTC sales of “Plan B,” which is essentially a post-coital contraceptive.
December 15th, 2006 at 6:58 am
Plan B (as the name so aptly suggests) is hardly the contraception device of choice among the majority of Americans.

Kansasnate and vaara, have you ever heard of John F. Kennedy, speaking to Baptist Ministers in Dallas? Aren’t we beyond religious tests for Prez? Same goes for the ridiculous things being said about Mitt Romney. Oppose Brownback and Romney’s policies, fine, but not because they are Catholic and Mormon. Most illiberal of you.
February 20th, 2007 at 5:26 pm
I don’t believe it is illiberal to question how someone’s relationship to their faith is going to affect their stances/actions on public policy. Kennedy did address this issue, as you say: “To allay fears that his Catholicism would impact his decision-making, he said in a famous speech in Houston, Texas (to the Greater Houston Ministerial Association), on September 12, 1960, ‘I am not the Catholic candidate for President. I am the Democratic Party’s candidate for President who also happens to be a Catholic. I do not speak for my Church on public matters - and the Church does not speak for me.’” Apparently he was successful in allaying those fears, as he was elected.
I would argue that we live in far different times now, and to understand a candidate regarding this issue is, uh, shall we say, fundamental for a great many people, left and right, as there is a belief among some that public policy should be founded on a bedrock of religious principles. I would be very interested in Brownback’s answer to the question of contraception, and I imagine there are those on the right who would be also.
As for the subheading of this blog, let’s savage Sam Brownback’s policies, not Sam Brownback.
