Brownback’s Targeted Generosity

by @ 1:41 am. Filed under Campaign Trail

I was looking through Sam Brownback’s “Restore America” PAC financial disclosure statements (for a completely different reason) and noticed a pattern to the disbursements for the 2004 campaign cycle. It appears even that for back Brownback was planning to run for president. Open Secrets has the numbers:

Bond, Christopher S ‘Kit’ (R-MO) $2,000
Bunning, Jim (R-KY) $1,000
Coburn, Tom (R-OK) $7,000
DeMint, James W (R-SC) $10,000
Martinez, Mel (R-FL) $2,000
Michels, Tim J (R-WI) $2,000
Voinovich, George V (R-OH) $1,000

Is it a coincidence that the largest disbursement by far was to a Senator whose state will be absolutely critical in the GOP primary for Brownback? Why Florida and Ohio? I’m sure it has nothing to do with those state’s importance in the general election. The others? Well, I haven’t had time to research motivations yet. Look for that in a future post.

To be clear, I’m not saying there is anything wrong with greasing a few palms in electorally essential states. In fact, it is quite common. I just find it interesting that he was thinking that strategically over a year ago. The man has clearly done his homework.
